FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 3, 2007) - The Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet is accepting grant proposals for projects that promote the use of recycled waste tires for athletic fields, playgrounds and other crumb rubber or mulch applications.

To a limited degree, the cabinet will consider funding research and development proposals for experimental practices or technologies.

Private entities or individuals, owners of commercial entities operating within Kentucky, public school districts, private schools, city and county governments, entities operating public parks, and state agencies are eligible. Due to limited funding, prior recipients are not eligible in this grant cycle for similar projects at the same location.

Applications must be received by close of business on Jan. 31, 2008, at the Division of Waste Management’s central office in Frankfort. The original and one copy of the entire application and any supporting documentation must be submitted in order for the application to be complete.

For more information, contact Lisa Evans, Division of Waste Management, 14 Reilly Rd., Building 5, Frankfort KY 40601, 502-564-6716. Her e-mail address is Lisa.Evans@ky.gov .  Information about the grants, the application and crumb rubber fact sheets are online at the division’s Web site – http://waste.ky.gov

Grant funding comes from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, an endowment established in 1998 by the Kentucky Legislature to receive fees collected from new tire sales. In 2007, grants totaling $1.2 million were awarded to 50 school districts, cities and counties.
