  • Secretary Brown names 2 to Juvenile Justice posts

    Justice and Public Safety Secretary J. Michael Brown today announced two appointments to top posts within the Department of Juvenile Justice. Ron Haws, who has served as Acting Commissioner since January, has been promoted to Commissioner for the department, and A. Hasan Davis has been named Deputy Commissioner in charge of operations.
  • Justice Cabinet awards more than $5.3 million in grants to crime victims' groups

    Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary J. Michael Brown announced today the cabinet has awarded more than $5.3 million in grants to provide crisis intervention, advocacy, counseling, shelter and other assistance to victims of crime. The money is allocated through the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), which relies on criminal fines, forfeitures and assessments instead of taxpayer dollars to support victim services.

    The Justice and Public Safety Cabinet today announced the award of 54 federal grants totaling more than $340,000 to local substance abuse and violence prevention coalitions. The grant money will fund Champions Coalitions – made up of local leaders, educators, professionals and concerned citizens – throughout the state.

    The Kentucky Criminal Justice Council will demonstrate how ankle bracelets equipped with GPS technology will be used to monitor certain inmates completing their sentence on home incarceration. The demonstration will begin at 2 p.m. Monday in Room C105 of the Transportation Cabinet Conference Center, 200 Mero Street, Frankfort.

The grant money will help police officers and criminal justice professionals protect families against drunken driving, drugs and other crimes.

  • Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement honors officers; Anthony Bersaglia named Officer of the Year

    In the four years he's been an officer with the Department of Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Anthony Bersaglia has built a reputation among his colleagues for his determination and dedication to the job. A former deputy sheriff and conservation officer, he generates an activity level that, according to his commanders, no one else can reach, was selected to be a firearms instructor within his first year with the department, and is a double recipient of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Award for Officer, which recognizes an officer for his or her dedication to commercial vehicle safety. “He is known as a man who sincerely reaches out to help those in need and help protect those who have entrusted their safety with him,” said Capt. Phillip Frazier, who coordinated the awards program. “He makes himself available to other officers and citizens, even when he is not on duty.” In honor of those achievements, KVE presented Bersaglia the 2007 Jason Cammack Officer of the Year Award, bestowing on him KVE's highest award, which recognizes “what a police officer should represent in his professional and personal life.”
