| Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet wants to give a big "thank you" to members of the Kentucky National Guard who assisted cabinet crews in getting roadways clear during last week's record snow and ice storm in Western Kentucky.
Guardsmen helped clear the Western Kentucky Parkway/Pennyrile Parkway interchange of numerous tractor trailers, helping to get traffic and plow trucks in the area, and also brought in graders to help Transportation Cabinet employees clear the Western Kentucky Parkway of snow and ice in Muhlenburg and Hopkins Counties. In addition, the National Guard helped stranded motorists stuck on Interstate 24 and other highways because of the snow.
"We want to personally thank General Storm and his staff for their tremendous support the last few days," said Maxwell Clay Bailey, Secretary, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "Their cooperation along with the support of the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Enforcement and Kentucky State Police is the type of coordination that Governor Fletcher and his administration are bringing to state government."
According to Ted Merryman, Chief District Engineer for the Transportation Cabinet's District One and District Two offices, Interstate 24, all parkways and other main routes are in good condition. Merryman says his crews continue to work on intersections and shoulders of those highways, along with trouble spots on some secondary roads. He adds that the District One office in Paducah hopes to complete removal efforts on their roads by late tonight, and that the District Two office in Madisonville hopes to complete removal efforts on their highways by late tomorrow.
