FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State Parks is in its eighth year offering the Family Adventure Quest – a trivia and digital photo contest for families or friends in teams of two to six people.
The Family Adventure Quest presents a series of trivia and challenges that teams complete by seeking out special places or subjects in various Kentucky State Parks and supplying a photo as the answer. Teams have through Dec. 5, 2013, to complete as many quests as they like. It’s a great goal-oriented way to have fun exploring the natural and historical resources of this fascinating state!
While some challenges are park-specific, most can be answered at any of multiple parks, and a few can even be answered right from your living room. Seek out and identify a flowering plant, capture the artistry of a historic home’s unique architecture, or just play with your food! A digital camera is necessary to capture your team’s fun along your journey, and your photos just might show up on our website or Facebook page.
Many have turned the quest into a family tradition, bringing together generations of family members each year to enjoy the experience, and some just look forward to the thrill of new frontiers as the quest packet arrives, not to mention coming up with just the right team name.
"Thank you for providing the incentive to explore Kentucky. We had a great time visiting Audubon and Blue Licks. We are looking forward to 2013 adventure!" says “The Hooligans,” in their fourth year participating.
A little tweaking to the prize structure last year has encouraged more people who may have worried about time restraints in the past. By correctly completing just 10 quests, your team will receive a certificate for a 1-night stay at the park lodge of your choice (Sunday – Thursday) and free passes to park museums or forts. Complete 20 quests and receive the stay and passes, plus a $25 Kentucky State Parks gift card. Complete all 25 quests and get the stay, passes and a $50 gift card!
"We have loved it! I have told everyone I know about it so they can enjoy as well," shared the Diddle family of Pikeville, who are already signed up again for their 2013 quest.
A $15 registration fee gets you the quest booklet, a Kentucky State Parks fleece picnic throw with carry handles, a 2013 Kentucky State Parks Calendar Planner (for first 200 registrants), bonus buy one, get one free coupon for one of the destinations involved, and informational materials to help you along your way.
Registration forms are available at www.parks.ky.gov (look for the “Family Adventure Quest” button), where you can also peruse the photo gallery of past participants. Photos must be submitted in electronic format on a CD. The challenge ends Dec. 5, 2013.
