On Saturday, Dec. 7, Diane Schneider, of Covington, will perform Christmas music on the harp from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

Schneider, is a Kentucky native with degrees from the University of Kentucky.  She trained for many years at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and later became the first music director at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky.

All of my music has been influenced by my Kentucky roots and experiences, and I feel privileged to have studied with one of the great harpists of our time, Joan Ceo, at the University of Kentucky,” Schneider states.

Schneider was an attorney for physically and mentally disabled persons for 10 years before moving to Canada to earn her doctorate in theology in the area of spirituality and medicine. While serving as a pastoral theologian and hospital chaplain, she began to use the harp with hospitalized patients. She has continued to conduct research in the Mayo Health System on the effects of harp vibrations upon patient symptoms.

"I use certain harp vibrations to resonate with a patient's own cellular rhythms to help release tense muscle tissue, calm anxiety, improve digestion, induce restful sleep, increase endorphins for pain management,” she said. “This music aids the body's own efforts to heal itself."

Schneider is a full-time therapeutic harpist and has been playing for more than 25 years. On Dec. 7 she will perform Christmas music, some of which can be found on her CD “Harp of Christmas Peace,” regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

Celebrating 10 years in 2013, the center currently features works by more than 700 artisans from more than 100 counties across the Commonwealth. Special exhibits on display include, “Capturing the Art of Sport: Works by Kentucky Artisans,” through Feb. 22, 2014. The center lobby features an 18-foot Christmas tree decorated with sports-themed gifts and ribbons in University of Kentucky blue and University of Louisville red.
