Part of the excitement during the holidays is shopping for the perfect gift for family and friends and the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is just the place to discover distinctive Kentucky-made treasures. To make holiday shopping even more enjoyable, the center will offer musical performances on four Saturdays beginning Nov. 30, up until Christmas Day.

On Nov. 30, the Chattering Magpies – Lorinda Jones and Greta Gillmeister – will perform holiday music on Irish harp and flute from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This instrumental duo intricately weaves the feeling of Celtic music into their holiday songs with the Irish harp, flute, dulcimer and whistle. From toe-tapping renditions of holiday favorites to hauntingly beautiful traditional Christmas carols, visitors will enjoy their experience at the center, drawn to these beautiful and unusual instruments and live music.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the center welcomes harpist Diane Schneider, of Covington, for her first appearance at the center. The musical performances will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each of the four Saturdays, with different performers each week.

Schneider is a full-time therapeutic harpist, and has been playing for more than 25 years. She will perform Christmas music, including some found on her CD “Harp of Christmas Peace,” regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, Kyle Meadows and Tisa McGraw will perform holiday music on hammer dulcimer and harp.

The duo will be playing holiday favorites, including traditional and sacred tunes. Musical recordings by Meadows and McGraw are regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center.

On Saturday, Dec. 21, Bob and Susie Hutchison, of Frankfort, will sing and perform holiday music on Appalachian dulcimers.

The Hutchisons perform instrumental duets that they arrange in diverse ways using varied harmonies, complex chords and rhythms that give a rich, full sound, and reveal a versatility that few expect in this instrument. Their holiday selections will include French, English, German and Welsh carols as well as such traditional favorites as “Jingle Bells” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain.”

Artisan demonstrations are also a regular feature from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each Saturday at the center.

Celebrating 10 years in 2013, the center currently features works by more than 700 artisans from more than 100 counties across the Commonwealth. Special exhibits on display include, “Capturing the Art of Sport: Works by Kentucky Artisans,” through Feb. 22, 2014.
