FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff until sundown on Dec. 9 in honor of Nelson Mandela, who passed away yesterday at the age of 95.

“Nelson Mandela transformed South Africa - leading the country to freedom, by sacrificing his own personal rights,” said Gov. Beshear. “He stands as a shining example of truth, hope and fairness for billions of people worldwide, and his legacy will not be forgotten. Let his passing serve as a reminder to us all that one man can truly make difference in the hearts, minds and freedom of many.”

This order follows a proclamation from President Barack Obama ordering flags to be flown at half-staff at the White House and other federal buildings to honor President Mandela.

Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute.

Flag status information is available at http://governor.ky.gov/Pages/flagstatus.aspx.
