Assistive Technology group moves to Vocational Rehabilitation

Friday, 10 05, 2012

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 5, 2012) – The Kentucky Assistive Technology Services Network (KATS), a statewide network of organizations and individuals connecting to enhance the availability of assistive technology devices and services, has moved administratively to the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR).

KATS Network is the statewide assistive technology program in Kentucky funded by the Assistive Technology Act of 1998, as amended. Its mission is to make assistive technology (AT) information, devices and services easily obtainable for people of any age and/or disability.

According to OVR Executive Director Dr. David Beach, “The location of the KATS Network in OVR should enhance its cross-disability mission, enable closer coordination with our Rehab Tech Branch, and increase its capacity to provide services statewide.”

In addition, the KATS Network Coordinating Center, along with its four AT Regional Centers, is announcing a new online system that allows individuals to borrow, buy, sell or trade assistive technology devices. The KY AT Locator website at www.katsnet.at4all.com will allow users to view the inventory of assistive technology devices that are available throughout the state, request a short term equipment loan or demonstration from any of the regional centers and post gently used AT items for sale or donation. If you have questions about using this system or you do not access to the Internet, please send email to JamesA.Brown@ky.gov, call (800) 327-5287 or contact one of the AT Centers: Bluegrass Technology Center in Lexington, EnTECH at Spalding University in Louisville, the Western Kentucky Assistive Technology Center at Wendell Foster’s Campus in Owensboro, and Redwood in Fort Mitchell.

The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet’s Department of Workforce Investment, assists Kentuckians with disabilities to achieve gainful employment and independence. For more information about services, call the office toll free at (800) 372-7172 or visit the OVR website at www.ovr.ky.gov.
