FRANKFORT, Ky. – The ninth annual Kentucky State Park Race Series will start April 20 with the Goose Creek 5K at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville.


The race series consists of 5K races at five Kentucky State Parks. Runners of all ages can participate in individual races or sign up to run in all five for the overall championship. Points and awards will be given for male and female runners in the series as well as those taking part in single races. These events are also open to walkers. Children, strollers and pets on a leash are welcome.


New in 2013 is an online registration option for runners. To register online and for other race information, visit www.parks.ky.gov/race-series


The other races, parks and dates are: 


  • May 11, Spring Hoot 5K at Barren River State Resort Park near Glasgow;
  • June 8, Possum Ridge 5K at Taylorsville Lake State Park at Taylorsville;
  • July 13, Magnolia 5K at Rough River Dam State Resort Park near Leitchfield; and
  • Aug. 3, Turkey Strut 5K at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park near Jamestown.


Each race has a preregistration fee of $20 and a week-prior and race-day fee of $25. For $85, runners can sign up for all five races if paid by April 12. Registration for individual races is handled through the individual parks. The fee for walkers for individual races is $15 in advance of the race and $20 during the week prior and race day. Walkers can sign up for all five events for $60.


All races will begin between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. local time.


Awards will be given to the overall male and female winner of each race and first- and second-place winners in each male and female age division. The grand prize winners, who must compete in all five races, will be named at the Aug. 3 Lake Cumberland race. Runners who participate in all five races will receive a certificate and will be registered for a special giveaway.
