FRANKFORT, Ky. (February 6, 2018) – Gov. Matt Bevin was joined in Lexington today by approximately 1,200 community leaders, elected officials, private citizens, and members of the faith-based community for the 52nd annual Kentucky Governor’s Prayer Breakfast.

"People turn to prayer, not because it's insignificant or a cultural crutch, but because it truly changes things," said Gov. Bevin. "People earnestly, instinctively, and collectively turn to prayer because when, at a time when everything else fades by comparison, the only tangible thing is prayer."

The breakfast, held at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena, featured an inspirational message from Nick Mingione, head baseball coach for the University of Kentucky. Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton introduced keynote speaker Albert Veksler, director of the Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast Movement.

“We are blessed to live in a nation where we can be bold in our faith," said Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton. "I turn to prayer every day to help solve problems in Kentucky.”

Sisters Reinette Kroeger and Lynette Shelton of Covington’s Notre Dame Urban Education Center (NDUEC) received the 2018 William Cooper Faith and Community In Action Award, named for the late Rev. William Jefferson Cooper Sr., founder of the Kentucky Governor’s Prayer Breakfast. Kroeger and Shelton founded NDUEC in 2009 to impact the lives of inner-city children through education, cultural enrichment, and faith.

Rev. Matt Reagan delivered the invocation and Rabbi Moshe Smolkin offered thoughts for 2018. Public Protection Cabinet Secretary David Dickerson and State Representative Derrick Graham read scripture passages. Other participants included Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles, State Representative Kim King, and Chief Justice John D. Minton, Jr.

Iron Bell Music and Alma Randolph provided special music for the event, and the Department of Fish & Wildlife Law Enforcement Division Color Guard led the presentation of colors.
