Geographic Information and Maps

The Commonwealth of Kentucky through the Commonwealth Office of Technology, the Division of Geographic Information (DGI) combined with organizations like the Kentucky Geospatial Board has made available a wealth of GIS-related information, data sets and maps.  These resources support education and training, research, and policy development for a multitude of organizations in Kentucky and across the United States. The Commonwealth Map - Kentucky's Basemap
Kentucky's Base Map is an ArcIMS image service. This single service exhibits nearly two decades of collective GIS efforts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This is a stand-alone version of the basemap layers that are included in many Kentucky ArcIMS services. The layers include a variety of high-resolution imagery, as well as boundaries, geodesy, routes, and public facilities.

Kentucky EZMap!
This very lightweight map viewer is also geared for the General Public. It includes all base layers along with Kentucky's State Parks and well marked roads. Aerial Images and Topo Maps are NOT available within this viewer.

Kentucky Simple Basemap
A Lightweight Map Viewer for the General Public. This is a stand-alone version of the basemap layers in a less complex tool, the layers included offer a variety of high-resolution imagery, as well as boundaries, geodesy, routes, and public facilities.

U.S. Geological Survey National Map Viewer
The National Map provides public access to high-quality, geospatial data and information from multiple partners to help support decision making by resource managers and the public. The National Map is the product of a consortium of federal, state, and local partners including Kentucky.

Kentucky's Incorporated Cities Map Viewer
A service that provides corporate boundaries in the Commonwealth of Kentucky relative to incorporated cities. This service is suitable for cartographics and general location queries.

Geodetic Control in Kentucky
The Geodetic Control in Kentucky map viewer allows the user to directly access NGS Data sheets for every control point in the Commonwealth. Surveyors and those in the engineering community will find the site to be very useful.

Kentucky Flood Hazard Mapping
This map viewer highlights floodprone areas in the Commonwealth using both new the DFIRM layers and the older information from the Q3 dataset. The updated DFIRM data for each county is being posted as it becomes available.

Kentucky State Parks
A full-featured map viewer focusing on Kentucky's State Parks. Hyperlinks to all Parks Detail Pages (using the hyperlink tool) can be used to find information regarding each park. Both Park Points and Boundaries are shown.

Hunting and Fishing Sites
This online map provides information about hunting and fishing access sites in Kentucky. It provides details and directions for each site.

Kentucky’s Recreational Trails
This map viewer provides access to the Commonwealth’s diverse trail resources. Hiking, Biking, Equine, ATV, and Motorcycle trails are included in the viewer. Check the site often as more trails are being mapped and added frequently.

KY GAP Public Lands
This GAP data layer was created for use with the Kentucky Gap Analysis Project in compliance with the National GAP efforts. The GAP GIS coverage/layer represents four categories of land management information. The layer provides a management status level, owner, and manager code for all lands throughout the state. This data layer was used during overlay anlaysis with the land cover and vertebrate models to assess the likelihood of future threats to biotic community elements.

Kentucky Geological Survey Publications
Database of Kentucky Geological Survey maps and publications. Online reports include summary and ordering information for publications. Many publications can be viewed online or downloaded for no charge. Many non-KGS geologic publications that pertain to Kentucky are included.

Kentucky Geological Survey - Simplified Geology Map Viewer
This is the 1:500,000-scale geologic map of Kentucky. Geologic unit names are provided by the identity tool, as well as karst and tectonic classification. The hyperlink tools provides access to the scanned 7.5-minute geologic maps.

Kentucky Geological Survey - Detailed Geology Map Viewer
This internet map service provides geologic maps and related information compiled by the Kentucky Geological Survey. This is a prototype map service. The features are functional, however, data is currently available for a limited portion of Kentucky. The map shows orange rectangles where some detailed data are available. Data sets include themes that relate to geology, land use, environmental protection and economic development. Also, descriptions of rock units, their behaviors and economic uses can be obtained using the site's search tools.

Kentucky Geological Survey Core & Sample Holdings Map Viewer
This site provides descriptive information about core and sample holdings at the Kentucky Geological Survey core facility.

Kentucky Geological Survey Land-Use Planning
This map service provides information about geologic rock units and soils for general planning and development. The geology is derived from Kentucky's 7.5-minute geologic maps, and soil information from the NRCS SURGO data. Expected ground conditions for each material is given in tables accessed with the identy tool. Links to related reports are given. Many counties have incomplete data, because data are still in preparation.

Kentucky Geological Survey Coal Information Map
This map shows locations of coal boreholes and coal thickness measurements from the KGS database. The identity tool gives summary information about the locations and provides links to the reports generated by the online database service.

Kentucky Geological Survey Coal Borehole Data
This site provides information about coal exploration drill holes on file at the KGS. Descriptive information about the wells is provided, along with detailed down-hole descriptions, coal seam summaries, and graphic strip logs. Users can download data in a delimited file.

Kentucky Geological Survey Coal Quality Data
This site provides information about coal quality data on file at KGS, including proximate, ultimate, physical properties and trace element analyses. Users can download data in a delimited file.

Kentucky Geological Survey Coal Thickness Data
This site provides information about coal thickness measurements on file at KGS. These data are generally surface observations at outcrops, high walls, and road cuts, but may include some data from drill holes and underground mines. Users can download data in a delimited file.

Kentucky Geological Survey Oil & Gas Wells Map
This map show the locations of oil and gas wells in the KGS online database. Links are provided to the online documents and samples database using the identity tool. 

Kentucky Geological Survey Oil & Gas Well Data
This site provides listings of oil and gas wells and associated information. Users can download well header information, and view documents, including geophysical logs, for each well.

Active Coal Mines
This map service shows the outlines of active coal mines documented by the Kentucky Revenue Cabinet. Mine polygons that have state file numbers assigned (SFN) have links to a report of detailed information about the mine, as well as scanned images of engineering drawings for the mine. Rectangular boxes indicate the locations of scanned maps for which no mine polygon has been created. These areas may or may not have mining activity.

All Historical Coal Mines
This map shows the outlines for all coal mines documented by the Kentucky Revenue Cabinet. Mines are separated on layers according to coal bed. The identy tool provides summary information about mines, but not all areas are linked to the Mines and Minerals database or scanned mine maps at this time. A project is under way to complete map digitization over the next two years.

Surface Mining Information
Shows locations of existing and proposed surface mine permits and mine shafts. Some attribute information provided by identity function.

Kentucky Geological Survey Water Wells and Springs Map
Shows locations of wells and springs in KGS online well database. Provides links to the lithology and casing reports, as well as county ground water atlas publications.

Kentucky Geological Survey Groundwater Data Repository Map and Data

Kentucky Geological Survey Water Well Data
This site provides information about water wells drilled in Kentucky that are on file at KGS. Well locations and basic descriptive information are given, as well as detailed lithology and casing reports. Users can download data in a delimited file.

Kentucky Geological Survey Springs Data
Provides locational and technical information about springs on file at KGS. Users can download data in a delimited file.

U.S. Geological Survey - Hydrology of Kentucky
This online map, developed in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey, contains numerous themes relating to Kentucky's hydrology, including NHD stream drainages, karst-related features, gauging stations, wells and springs, dams, soils and geology. A query tool for calculating the drainage area of a stream is provided.

KY Proposed Water Infrastructure Projects
This image service and the associated HTML Viewer application allow for access to information regarding proposed water infrastructure improvements in the Commonwealth.

Water Management Planning
This map shows features related to public water supply systems, including wells, springs, dams, USGS guaging stations, surface water sources, water service areas and proposed water supply projects.

Wastewater Mapping Portal
This map service provides a detailed overview of the Commonwealth’s wastewater infrastructure. Treatment Plants, Lift Stations, Outfalls, and collection lines are all visible through this service.

Watershed Viewer
This map service shows the hydrologic basin boundaries for the state of Kentucky. Hyperlink tool provides access to watershed management reports.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet  Active Six Year Plan Projects
This map shows active highway projects in Kentucky. The identify tool provides summary information about the projects and a contact email address for more information.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet HIS Interactive Planning Map
This site provides a variety of infrastructure layers, primarily related to transportation. Route logs for roads can be accessed with the identy tool. A link to the Land Use Planning service is provided.
