Second Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl food drive kicks off Oct. 15
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 3, 2018) – Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes on Wednesday announced the second annual Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl, a food drive her office is hosting with the Kentucky Association of Food Banks and the Kentucky Association of Counties (KACo).
"One in six Kentuckians – and even more heartbreaking, one in five Kentucky children – regularly struggle with hunger," said Grimes. "That's 700,000 Kentuckians. We must do everything we can to change that. As we approach the holiday season and wintertime, I am proud my office is joining forces with KACo and the Kentucky Association of Food Banks to help feed Kentucky's kids and their families. Let's make a difference."
The Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl food drive is a friendly competition among Kentucky counties and their local officials across the state to raise resources for food banks at an important time of need – just before the holidays. Last year's competition raised the equivalent of approximately 250,000 pounds of food.
"As the President of KACo, I wholeheartedly encourage and challenge all Kentucky counties to participate in this year's friendly statewide competition that supports the Kentucky Association of Food Banks, a wonderful organization doing important work across the entire Commonwealth," said Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk and KACo President David Nicholson. "So, let's all get in the game and do our best to collect food and funds to help our fellow Kentuckians in need."
The 2018 campaign will run from October 15 through October 26. The partners' goal is to raise 160,000 pounds of food or $20,000. Every dollar raised is equivalent to eight pounds of food.
"The Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl will help put food on the table for the thousands of Kentuckians who don't always know where their meals are coming from," said Tamara Sandberg, executive director of the Kentucky Association of Food Banks. "We are grateful to Secretary Grimes and KACo for leading this effort and honored to partner with them in the fight against hunger in Kentucky."
Grimes has been a champion for solving Kentucky's hunger issues since she took office in 2012 and before she was elected to public office. She is a longtime volunteer at the Salvation Army, serving the Thanksgiving meal at her local service center every year. She also has served on the board of God's Pantry Food Bank in Lexington.
