Attorney General Coleman Congratulates Matt Butler on Appointment as Letcher Commonwealth’s Attorney

FRANKFORT Ky. (Aug. 28, 2024) – Attorney General Russell Coleman congratulated Matt Butler, who was appointed Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 47th Judicial Circuit in Letcher County by the Governor following the retirement of Edison Banks, II.

Commonwealth's Attorneys prosecute felony crimes in Kentucky. Butler previously worked with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy and served as a defense attorney in Letcher County. A Michigan native, Mr. Butler moved to Kentucky in 2007.

“I was glad to call our newest colleague, Matt Butler, to congratulate him on this appointment as Commonwealth’s Attorney. We’ll bring zealous collaboration to support his efforts to protect families in Letcher County,” said Attorney General Coleman.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to serve the people of Letcher County,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Butler “I look forward to working alongside Attorney General Coleman and his Office to keep Kentuckians safe.”

General Coleman has directed the Attorney General’s Office to support County and Commonwealth’s Attorneys across Kentucky, particularly through the Special Prosecutions Unit, the Criminal Appeals Division and the Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Commonwealth’s Attorney Butler is joined by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Nick Whitaker, Victim Advocate Katrina Jones, Michael Watts, who returned to the Office as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, among others.
