FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 3, 2024) – Attorney General Russell Coleman filed a brief in the Kentucky Supreme Court today to uphold the sentence for the killer of Trinity Randolph, a three-year-old who was shot and killed at her home in Louisville along with her father Brandon Waddles in August 2020. Kevon Lawless, 27, was sentenced to life without parole after being found guilty on two counts of Murder and one count of Burglary in the First Degree by a Louisville jury. Lawless had previously been convicted of attempted murder in a separate case.
Under Kentucky law, appeals for any life imprisonment sentence are taken directly to the Commonwealth’s Supreme Court.
“The slaying of three-year-old Trinity Randolph along with her father sickened the Louisville community. I will never forget the heaviness and grief the day I stood before Trinity’s Disney ‘Frozen’ coffin with her mother. This family was robbed of their precious child, and it’s our duty – as prosecutors and law enforcement – to deliver justice,” said Attorney General Coleman. “We are asking the Supreme Court to respect the jury’s verdict, uphold this lawful sentence and help give closure to a family who has suffered for so long.”
Kentucky’s Principal Deputy Solicitor General Jack Heyburn prepared the brief on behalf of the Commonwealth. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Ryane Conroy from the Office of Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina D. Whethers prosecuted the case. The Louisville Metro Police Department investigated the case.
