Archery Ranges Open On Taylorsville Lake Wildlife Management Area

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 29, 2018) — A new archery range and woodland course are now open on Taylorsville Lake Wildlife Management Area in Spencer County.

The public archery ranges are adjacent to the wildlife management area’s office at 1584 Overlook Road near Taylorsville, Kentucky. There is no charge to use them.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources collaborated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 270 to build the static archery range and eight-station woodland course.

Eagle Scout candidates Samuel Clark and Ethan Wilborn assisted Kentucky Fish and Wildlife throughout as part of their Eagle Scout projects. Each planned logistics and facilitated multiple troop workdays to complete their respective sections of the range. Other members of the Boy Scouts troop from Bagdad, Kentucky played integral roles throughout the construction process, helping with site preparation, building and installing target frames and roofs and doing cleanup work.

The static field range features target bags placed from 15 to 35 yards, as well as targets set at 10 and 15 meters. The woodland course features a quarter-mile walking trail with eight shooting stations, each with targets placed from 15 to 50 yards. Plans are in place to add another seven stations to the course.

“Our hope is that this new archery complex will provide target shooting opportunity for individual archers and bow hunters, as well as opportunities for many other organizations and groups, for many years to come,” said Zach Beyer, Taylorsville Lake Wildlife Management Area manager.

The static range and woodland course are open 9 a.m. to sunset from Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Monday. Target bags are designed for field tips only; broadheads are prohibited on the static range and woodland course.

For more information, or to reserve the range for group events or activities, contact the WMA office at 502-477-9024 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
