NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (September 20, 2025) – On Tuesday, September 16, Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf presented a ceremonial check for $17,000 to Jessamine County Attorney Brian Goettl and his Child Support staff. The check represents funds collected through a new Treasury initiative that helps custodial parents receive the child support they are owed.
“As a former County Attorney for 22 years, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges families face when needed child support goes unpaid.” Treasurer Metcalf said. “This initiative helps ensure custodial parents receive the resources they’re entitled to so they can better provide for their children.”
The initiative, launched through the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division, directs unclaimed funds toward unpaid child support—through the proper legal process—before any remaining balance of unclaimed property is returned to the individual. Jessamine served as the pilot county for the program, which will now expand across Kentucky.
County Attorney Brian Goettl praised the effort. “This partnership with the Treasurer’s Office gives us another tool to collect child support that is rightfully owed to custodial parents and their children. Every dollar collected makes a difference.”
Unclaimed property includes financial assets such as uncashed checks, dormant bank accounts, or insurance payments. By law, the Treasury holds these assets until claimed. Since taking office, Treasurer Metcalf’s administration has returned nearly $68 million in unclaimed property to rightful owners across the Commonwealth.
