Precautionary Measures Taken at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site Due to Leaking Dam

UNION, Ky. (June 28, 2018) – Park officials have taken more precautions to limit access to a lake at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site where a dam is leaking.

The water level of the 9.6-acre lake is being drawn down to reduce the chance of a sudden failure and to provide an opportunity to examine the leak, which began June 22.

The park in Boone County has also closed an access road to the lake as well as a nearby picnic shelter. Signs have been posted along Big Bone Creek downstream from the leaking dam alerting anglers of the possible danger.

Department of Parks and Division of Water officials are continuing to monitor the dam daily and will continue to draw down the lake. The Department of Parks has also notified state and local emergency officials, though the dam does not appear to be in imminent danger.
