FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 5, 2024) — Kentucky State Parks continue to celebrate its 100th anniversary with a series of events in April.
Renowned Kentucky Poet Laureate Silas House will lead a 100th celebration specialty writing retreat at Dale Hollow State Resort Park from April 6-7, offering attendees a unique opportunity to participate in guided discussions and sessions, a one-night stay in the lodge or cabin, and two delicious meals while exploring the park. Registration fees, which include lodging and meals, range from $250 plus tax for single lodge room occupancy to $450 plus tax for double cabin occupancy. There is also a $150 day pass option. On Monday, April 8, several state parks, including Blue Licks Battlefield, Rough River Dam, Cumberland Falls, Barren River Lake, Wickliffe Mounds and John James Audubon State Park, will host solar eclipse watch parties. Guests can purchase solar eclipse glasses at the parks, and viewing areas are first come, first served. Visitors are urged to check for traffic updates by visiting 2024 Solar Eclipse (arcgis.com).
Cumberland Falls State Resort Park will hold its annual American Indian Heritage Weekend from Friday, April 19 - Sunday, April 21. The event will offer educational presentations, hands-on workshops, kids' crafts, authentic craft vendors, storytelling, music and more, all aimed at celebrating the history and culture of the indigenous people of the Cumberland Plateau. The event is free and open to the public.
Camping enthusiasts can look forward to Camper Appreciation Weekend, from Friday April 26 – Sunday, April 28. Campers will receive two nights of camping for the price of one and a chance to participate in fun activities, including guided hikes, scavenger hunts, kids' crafts and much more. Closing out the month of April, My Old Kentucky Home will host a free event on April 28 at 11 a.m. featuring Aimee Griffith, the artist behind the 2020 Kentucky Derby Festival Poster. Griffith will conduct a live painting demonstration, and attendees will have the opportunity to interact with the artist and purchase her prints.
