Postsecondary Education Symposium set Dec. 18

The Council on Postsecondary Education, in collaboration with the Office of the Governor, will host the 2018 Postsecondary Education Symposium Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the Louisville Marriott East, 1903 Embassy Square Blvd., Louisville. Attendees for the half-day event include leadership of Kentucky’s public and private colleges and universities.

The keynote opening address featuring Michael Crow, president of Arizona State University, will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. Gov. Matt Bevin will address attendees at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Additionally, both the keynote and the luncheon address will be live-streamed at https://www.youtube.com/c/KYCPE/live and archived via CPE’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjTGQhVWOv3jNg5h1cw0H8A. An on-site viewing room for the live stream will also be available in the Cardinal Room on the second floor.

Members of the media are asked to RSVP by Monday, Dec. 17, to Sue Patrick at sue.patrick@ky.gov if attending in person.

Attendees will be assigned to one of four breakout sessions to discuss and reflect on Dr. Crow’s comments.

  • 7:30 a.m. - Registration
  • 8-8:45 a.m. - Networking breakfast
  • 9-10:30 a.m. - Welcome by Gov. Matt Bevin, Keynote address: Dr. Michael Crow, Arizona State University President
  • 10:30-10:45 a.m. - Break
  • 10:45 a.m.-noon - Focus group breakout sessions
  • 12-1:15 p.m. - Luncheon, Emcee: CPE President Aaron Thompson, Luncheon address: Gov. Matt Bevin

Statutorily-Required Orientation and Training

The annual state-level orientation and training session for new board members appointed since October 2017 will begin at the conclusion of the symposium. Completion of the session will fulfill the state-level portion of the statutorily-required orientation and training program for new board members per HB 15 (2016). Speakers include CPE President Aaron Thompson and Dr. Carol Cartwright, President Emeritus of Kent State University and Bowling Green State University. The session is scheduled from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

The Council on Postsecondary Education is leading efforts to get more Kentuckians more highly educated. By 2030, at least 60 percent of working-age adults in Kentucky will need to have earned a postsecondary education degree or credential to meet expected workforce demands.
