Early Postsecondary Opportunities Workgroup to hold its first virtual meeting on April 12

A state workgroup focused on early college opportunities will hold its first virtual meeting next week to discuss goals, identify priority areas and consider next steps.

The Early Postsecondary Opportunities Workgroup will meet at 1 p.m. ET, Monday, April 12 via livestream on the Council’s YouTube channel. The agenda is available at http://cpe.ky.gov/aboutus/cecmeetings.html

The Commonwealth Education Continuum formed the workgroup in March as part of a major push to improve Kentucky’s education and workforce pipeline. It is one of three subgroups that will help the continuum develop policy recommendations and implement change over the next nine months.

Specifically, the workgroup will focus on providing more equitable opportunities and greater support for students and families with regard to early, college-level experiences.

Commissioner of Education Jason E. Glass and Kentucky Community and Technical College System Interim President Paul Czarapata are co-leading the effort.

Members include:

  • Sandra Baker, Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce
  • Stacy Bassett, College Board
  • Dr. Dan Connell, Morehead State University
  • Brad Hall, University of the Cumberlands
  • David Horseman, Kentucky Department of Education
  • Eugene Hutchins, Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority
  • Carla Kersey, Kentucky Educational Development Corporation
  • Marybeth Lawson, GEAR UP Kentucky
  • Anthony Mires, AdvanceKentucky
  • Dr. OJ Oleka, president of the Association of Kentucky Independent Colleges and Universities

  • Rep. James Tipton, Kentucky House of Representatives
  • Christine Tarquinio, Louisville Metro Chamber of Commerce
  • Dr. Kathleen “Kakie” Urch, University of Kentucky

State education leaders have sought to include diverse perspectives in each workgroup’s membership. The other two groups will focus on the transition to postsecondary education and educator workforce and diversity.
