Nationally renowned higher education scholar Arthur Levine keynotes trusteeship conference

State officials and education leaders from across the commonwealth will gather Sept. 19-20 in Louisville for the Postsecondary Education Trusteeship Conference, featuring nationally renowned author and education expert Arthur Levine.

Levine is the author of The Great Upheaval, hailed by critics as “a crisp, cogent case for the future of higher education in America.” He will present on the future of higher education during a time of rapidly changing demographic, economic and technological forces. He will predict what lies in store for higher education, and how colleges and universities can position themselves for continued relevance, stability and success.

The conference, hosted by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, has attracted an in-person registration of over 230 Kentuckians that serve as leadership or trustees at public and private postsecondary institutions, as well as key stakeholders from the K-12 system, workforce and policy-driving organizations. It is also the first year in which the annual conference offers a virtual attendance ticket option, and there are a limited number of those still available at: cpe.ky.gov/trusteeship/index.html.

CPE President Aaron Thompson will kick off the conference with an opening keynote on surviving and thriving in a post-pandemic world. He'll discuss the challenges campuses already were facing – declining enrollments, price sensitivity and inequitable student outcomes – that have accelerated during COVID and how colleges can embrace innovative practices to address those challenges.

Thompson's keynote will be followed by a panel of college and university presidents as they discuss the game-changing strategies they are implementing to meet Kentucky’s higher education goals.

Day two of the conference begins with Levine's keynote and features a luncheon address by Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman. Coleman's address will be followed by a panel discussion with Kentucky legislative leaders on the higher education issues that will take center stage during the 2023 General Assembly.

The conference includes a range of breakout sessions featuring state, education and business leaders from across the commonwealth. Topics will include addressing the healthcare workforce shortage; equity in student outcomes; supporting adult learners; and meeting students' non-academic needs, such as food, housing, transportation and child care.
