Grimes Welcomes Nearly 200 New Citizens in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 6, 2018) – Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes on Thursday helped welcome 197 new Americans who took the oath of citizenship a ceremony at Louisville Free Public Library. The ceremony marks Grimes' 89th naturalization as Secretary.

"On the heels of recognizing the men and women who help make our democracy work, our poll workers, today I welcome you as new citizens of the United States of America, and I encourage you to be part of our democratic process," Grimes said. "Your right to vote is precious, and if you don't use your vote, you give up a loud voice in the process."

Grimes encouraged the new citizens to use GoVoteKY.com, the Commonwealth’s online voter registration portal, to register. She reminded the new citizens and their families of the duties of citizenship, including voter participation, civic engagement, and using their voice to make a difference in the Commonwealth and nation.

The new citizens represented 58 different countries.

The secretary of state’s staff attend each naturalization ceremony held in Kentucky to greet new citizens and answer questions regarding voting and registration.
