FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 24, 2019) – On Wednesday, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes warned Kentucky voters of false information being circulated by Judicial Watch, a partisan activist group.
Tom Fitton, President of Judicial Watch, tweeted on Sunday: "HUGE: Kentucky set to remove up to 250k inactive voters."
Grimes is warning Kentuckians that this information is false and misleading. The State Board of Elections recently issued a mailing to 250,000 Kentucky voters regarding their voter registration status.
Kentucky voters that received a postcard must update their registration or vote within the next two federal elections, 2020 or 2022. If so, those individuals will not be removed from the voter rolls.
Grimes has been working diligently to ensure that no voter is unilaterally removed.
"Judicial Watch is pushing false information seeking to mislead and undermine our elections," said Grimes, Chief Election Official. "At worst they are actively working to keep people from voting."
Under Grimes' direction, Kentucky was the first state in the nation to partner with the U.S. Department of Justice ("DOJ") regarding voter roll maintenance. This action sped up the process to remove voters who have moved out of Commonwealth of Kentucky.
The agreement with the DOJ provides that removals based on individuals who are believed to have moved residences but who have not updated their voter registrations, were delayed due to a lack of funding from the Kentucky General Assembly.
