FRANKFORT, Ky. (January 22, 2020) – Senate Bill 2 is headed to the Senate floor, after passing easily through the Senate State and Local Government Committee this afternoon in an 8-3 vote. Senate Bill 2, also known as the Photo ID Bill, requires voters to provide photo identification when voting, unless they can establish a reasonable impediment.
Secretary of State Michael G. Adams praised the bill’s chief sponsor, Senator Robby Mills, and remarked after the passage. “I’m deeply grateful to Senator Mills and Senate leadership for making photo ID a priority.”
Since the bill was introduced, Secretary Adams has been meeting with those opposed to the bill, and proposed tweaks along the way to address their concerns. “I want a sound, workable bill that survives court review and is implemented as soon as reasonably possible.”
The photo IDs will be free, even for those who don’t use them to vote. Secretary Adams believes the proposed bill is a critical step in proposing ballot integrity. “Why would we leave ourselves vulnerable to voter impersonation when there is such a simple fix?” he asked.
The bill would take effect for the November 2020 election.
