REPUBLICANS RISE, INDEPENDENTS DROP

Frankfort, Ky. (June 12, 2026) – Secretary of State Michael Adams announced that in May, Republicans continued to increase their share of Kentucky voters; but “Other” voters, including Independents, fell for the first time since February 2025, when a purge removed over 230,000 voters of all political affiliations. The last month that Republicans rose while Independents declined was April 2020.

“After countless months in which Independents have out-registered Republicans and Democrats combined, this is a noteworthy change,” Adams said. “Time will tell whether this is a momentary blip and Kentucky’s political center will continue to grow.”

Net registration rose by 104, with 4,633 voters removed: 3,883 who were deceased, 611 felony convicts, 64 adjudged mentally incompetent, 42 duplicate registrations, 25 who voluntarily de-registered and 8 who moved out of state.

Republican registration accounts for 48 percent of the electorate, with 1,614,657 voters. Republican registration grew by 3,747 voters, a .23 percent increase. Democratic registration accounts for 41 percent of the electorate, with 1,371,232 voters. Democratic registration fell by 3,305, a .24 percent decrease. There are 379,569 voters registered under other political affiliations (mostly independent), making up 11 percent of the electorate. “Other” registration declined by 338, a .09 percent decrease.
