FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 1, 2012) – The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) has designated October 2012 as Kentucky Archives Month in conjunction with American Archives Month. The theme for this year is sports, in honor of Kentucky’s rich tradition of participating in diverse sporting events and the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Nearly 300 archival and manuscript repositories in Kentucky hold archival records that document the history of Kentucky. Their holdings include personal papers, photographs, Bibles, diaries, letters and government records – such as marriage certificates and wills. Many of these institutions are hosting special programs, open houses, exhibits and speakers to highlight historical materials available for research in Kentucky archival and manuscript repositories. All of the events are listed on the Kentucky Archives Month website at http://archivesmonth.ky.gov.
The Kentucky State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) will present two Certificates of Merit to commemorate Kentucky Archives Month. Sister Emma Cecilia Busam, OSU, retired archivist for her order of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Owensboro, will be honored with a Certificate of Merit for Significant Service as an Archivist. She worked more than 30 years in archival repositories in Kentucky.
Donna Baker, former archivist at Morehead State University, will be honored with a Certificate of Merit for Notable Service to and Advocacy for Archives in Kentucky by a Public Official. Baker has served on the boards of the Kentucky Council on Archives, the Kentucky Association of Teachers of History, the Kentucky Archives Month Coordinating committee, and KDLA’s University Archives and Records Management Advisory Committee while working in Kentucky.
Kentucky Archives Month is sponsored by the Kentucky State Historical Records Advisory Board, the Kentucky Council on Archives, the Friends of Kentucky Public Archives Inc. and KDLA. For further information, call 502-564-8300 ext. 246.
