FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Rafting and paddling enthusiasts will be glad to know that the weekend of March 16 marks the beginning of the rafting season on the Big South Fork River with Sheltowee Trace Outfitters.

The Kentucky Office of Adventure Tourism wants outdoor enthusiasts to know about paddling and other outdoor opportunities as spring approaches.

Among the region’s most popular paddling outfitters, Sheltowee Trace has been guiding folks on rivers in southern and eastern Kentucky for years. Trips of varying length and difficulty are offered on the Big South Fork this time of year; schedule your trip by visiting the website at www.ky-rafting.com.

The Redbud Ride in London on April 13 is one of the most exciting cycling events in the state. In 2011, Active.com named the Redbud Ride the “Best Century Ride in America.” Along with the Redbud Ride Warm-Up on April 12 in Barbourville, this year’s ride starts with registration at 7 a.m. There will again be four different route options of varying lengths to accommodate riders.  More information and online registration is available at www.redbudride.com.

Kentucky’s State Parks are offering some great deals to campers this April.  Campers will receive a 20 percent discount on reservations made April 1-25.  The last weekend of the month, April 26-27, will be Camper Appreciation Weekend. During this weekend, campers will receive two nights’ camping for the price of one. Many of the parks also have special events planned for this weekend. Find a state park campground near you, and make reservations at www.parks.ky.gov.

As the weather warms and spring blooms, there will be plenty more adventures coming up in the next few months. Be sure to make plans to get outside and explore some of your favorite locations in Kentucky.
