FRANKFORT, KY. (Feb. 28, 2013) – Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) hosted a Severe Weather Tabletop Exercise this week at the Commonwealth Emergency Operations Center (CEOC), located in Frankfort at Kentucky National Guard Boone Center. Other partners participated in various locations at the statewide and local levels.
At the Frankfort exercise, federal, state and local emergency management, along with other officials, discussed a severe weather event scenario and all event phases – pre-event, response, recovery and long-term recovery. Part of the exercise included testing the physical relocation of the CEOC and mobilization of the Emergency Management Mobile Communications Vehicle (EMMVC), which has been deployed on several occasions in support of events and disasters. The most recent disaster deployment was in support of the March 2, 2012 tornadoes that struck West Liberty.
"Building from lessons learned, these exercises serve as a rehearsal prior to a real world event, which helps us to improve, not only our response capabilities, but our preparedness and planning, as well," said KYEM Director John Heltzel.
During Governor Steve Beshear’s administration Kentucky has received 11 presidential major declarations, all weather related.
"Although weather is Kentucky’s most common threat, we must consider and be prepared for all types of hazards, which include: man-made, health, terrorist and other natural disasters," Heltzel said.
As part of March Severe Weather Awareness Month all individuals, businesses, organizations and agencies, should be aware of all risks and prepare to reduce those threats. KYEM encourages everyone to review and update their "All Hazards Emergency Plan" and discuss it with their family, staff and others. If you need assistance developing a plan, contact your local emergency management director.
