Today, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will join Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, other elected officials, and students in a day of service at God's Pantry Food Bank in Lexington to honor Hunger Action Month.  The group will pack several hundred meals for distribution within God's Pantry's service area. Grimes will also present a gubernatorial proclamation officially declaring September Hunger Action Month in Kentucky.

"It is a privilege to join in this day of service to mark the beginning of Hunger Action Month in the Commonwealth," Grimes said. "Thousands of Kentuckians don't know where their next meal will come from. I know first-hand about the remarkable work this organization does to combat hunger in Kentucky and I'm honored to participate today."

God's Pantry's goal for Hunger Action Month is to create a movement throughout September to engage people to help work to end hunger in Kentucky.

"We are excited to have Secretary of State Grimes and other elected officials help us kick off the month with their own commitment of volunteer time," said Marian Guinn, CEO of God's Pantry Food Bank. "There is much that can be done – and meaningful work for all who care to be involved.  Too many Kentuckians routinely struggle with hunger!"

Grimes has championed the cause of solving Kentucky's hunger issues since she took office in 2012 and before she was elected to public office. Earlier this year, Grimes backed HB 141, which created incentives for Kentucky farmers who donate to food banks. The legislation, as signed into law, allows farmers who donate their produce, beef, poultry, fish, pork or other edible products to be eligible for state tax credits.

God's Pantry Food Bank serves 50 central and eastern Kentucky counties through a partnership with almost 300 agencies. In 2012, the organization distributed 24 million pounds of groceries to more than 211,000 individuals, including 8 million pounds of fresh produce.
