Berea artist Mary Lykins will demonstrate how she creates her fabric dolls from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

As a doll artist Lykins is completely self-taught and learned her craft by reading and experimenting. Through trial and error she has come to create a variety of fabric dolls in a variety of styles.
It all began 23 years ago when her neighbor, who made dolls for Red Bird Mission, an Appalachian craft market industry run by the United Methodist church, urged her to make some. Using a pattern lent by her friend, Lykins began making dolls and selling them through Red Bird Mission as well. She eventually began selling her dolls elsewhere and is constantly amazed by how far and wide her creations go.

“I received a call from a lady in Wisconsin who said she wrote children’s books and had bought my “Mortimer Mouse” doll at the World’s Fair.” Lykins said. “The woman said she loved the mouse doll so much that she was going to write a story about it for her grandchildren!”

Dolls by Lykins are regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, located at 200 Artisan Way, just off Interstate 75 at Berea, Exit 77. The center’s exhibits, shopping and travel information areas are open daily, year-round, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the cafe is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The center currently features works by more than 700 artisans from more than 100 counties across the Commonwealth.
