Dr. John Langefeld Will Provide Oversight of Clinical Decisions

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 13, 2013) – The Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) announced today that Dr. John Langefeld has joined the Department for Medicaid Services as chief medical officer. He began work on June 1.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Langefeld to our Medicaid team,” said CHFS Secretary Audrey Tayse Haynes. “He brings a wealth of clinical experience to the position that will be invaluable in providing oversight of the managed care organizations’ medical and clinical strategies as we all strive to create a healthier Kentucky. Dr. Langefeld will be so valuable as we are continuing to improve the health delivery system for everyone involved – from providers to patients.”

A Lexington resident and graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Dr. Langefeld has extensive health care experience in clinical care, provider management, managed care, large employer-sponsored benefit programs, Worker’s Compensation/Disability, and data analytics and information management.

He comes to the Cabinet from his position as chief medical officer for Artemetrx, a Tennessee-based company with an office in Lexington that specializes in how data analysis can aid in clinical outcomes that has worked with many large employers and public entities. Prior to Artemetrx, Dr. Langefeld was the medical director and vice president of healthcare management for Bluegrass Family Health in Lexington. He has also held several medical director and clinical positions. A Kentucky native, Dr. Langefeld completed his undergraduate work at Berea College, a family practice residency at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and served as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He currently also serves as an instructor in family and geriatric medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

“A knowledgeable chief medical officer is invaluable to any health insurance program. As Kentucky prepares to expand Medicaid coverage to an additional 300,000 individuals, Dr. Langefeld’s clinical background and continuing connection to the university community will serve the Commonwealth well,” said Medicaid Commissioner Lawrence Kissner.

“I am pleased to join the Department for Medicaid Services and the Cabinet at such an exciting time,” said Dr. Langefeld. “The goal of creating a healthier Medicaid population and a healthier Kentucky is one I believe in and look forward to contributing to. Ensuring that Medicaid and the MCOs are making the best clinical decisions to get the patient outcomes we want is essential.”
