FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), a national arts nonprofit organization, will host its fifth annual Arts Festival Conference Oct. 7-8 at the Seelbach Hilton hotel in Louisville.

WESTAF, located in Denver, is a leader in the development of innovative web-based technologies serving the arts field across the United States. WESTAF partners with many state arts agencies, including the Kentucky Arts Council. The conference is presented in coordination with ZAPPlication, WESTAF's online centralized art show application hub for artists.

The 2013 arts festival conference is designed for presenters of visual arts fairs, including show directors, festival staff and artists. The event is an opportunity for attendees to meet other artists and art fair professionals, learn best practices and resources for the art festival field, take advantage of portfolio review opportunities, and strengthen the art fair community.

"Kentucky has numerous arts fairs and festivals, and the information WESTAF will offer at the conference could benefit many of the state's festival presenters," said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director. "The opportunities to network with artists and event administrators are priceless."

Conference events include:

  • A visit to the St. James Court Art Show and conference receptions.
  • Sessions focused on small business and nonprofit marketing, branding and sales.
  • A portfolio review session that shows what images and an actual projected jury process
    looks like.
  • A thought-provoking symposium led by an expert panel on creative interpretation, fair use, imitation v. inspiration, and copyright law.

"Arts Festival Conference attendees are all makers — some of art, some of events — and we are excited to have the opportunity to provide professional development to a creative crew in a creative manner with the St. James Court Art Show and the cultural vibrancy of Kentucky as a backdrop," said Leah Charney, manager of ZAPP® and conference director.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
