On Sunday, July 21, Lorinda Jones and Greta Gillmeister of the group Chattering Magpies, will perform Celtic music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea celebrates 10 years as Kentucky’s showcase for the arts with three days of celebration.
This female instrumental duo from Kentucky consists of Jones on Irish harp and dulcimer and Gillmeister on Irish flute and whistle. The Chattering Magpies intricately weave the melodies of traditional Celtic airs, jigs, hornpipes and reels to bring out the nuance of each song on the Irish harp, flute, dulcimer, whistle, spoons and bones. From toe-tapping to heart-wrenching, audiences are drawn to the beautiful and unusual instruments and are spellbound by the music.
As musicians and certified music therapists, both Jones and Gillmeister believe that the ancient tunes of the Celts encompass the range of human emotions. They perform at traditional dulcimer and Irish festivals, teach workshops on their respective instruments, and conduct sessions for retreats and special wellness programs.
The group is part of the Kentucky Arts Council’s Performing Arts Directory and their performance on July 21 is made possible in part by the Kentucky Arts Council.
Music by the Chattering Magpies is regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, located at 200 Artisan Way, just off Interstate 75 at Berea, Exit 77.
