The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will host guest speaker Dr. Pearlie M. Johnson from the University of Louisville presenting “Quilt Art: Examining the Narrative in Kentucky Quilts.”
Johnson grew up in east Texas watching her grandmother quilt. As a young child, she went to quilting bees and threaded the needles for many of her grandmother’s creations. When Johnson met Dr. Maude Wahlman, a professor and researcher of African-American quilts, her own interest in quilts became re-kindled. She began interviewing women quilters in the Kansas City region where she lived and continued her research after coming to the University of Louisville to teach.
Johnson’s presentation of works by 30 quilters is based on oral history interviews. Her visual presentation of these works will address the connections of history, stories, pattern, and the economics that sometimes drove the creation of these quilts.
This talk is free and open to the public and begins at 1:00 p.m. in the center’s private dining room. This presentation is sponsored in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is being held in conjunction with Berea’s city-wide Quilt Extravaganza Celebration.
